What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a conservative, natural healing art and science that concentrates on keeping people well. While Chiropractic is an American science over 100 years old, its wellness practices have stood the test of time - dating back to spinal manipulations first used by Hippocrates, the Father of Healing, in the 4th Century B.C.
We provide advanced spinal correction and chiropractic adjustments utilizing "state of the art" chiropractic techniques. Never in the history of chiropractic care have chiropractors been able to provide the level of help and expertise that is available today. Many of the newest chiropractic techniques are actually safer, more comfortable and more effective than ever before.
Doctors of Chiropractic attempt to get to the root cause of a health problem rather than just treat the symptoms. They seek to maximize the natural strengths of the body and its capacity to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The primary focus of Chiropractic is the detection, reduction and correction of spinal misalignments and nervous system dysfunction (vertebral subluxation).
Subluxations irritate the nerves and disrupt the body's ability to send "command center" messages to and from the brain through the spine to different parts of the body such as the tissue, bone, glands and organs. All parts of the human body require proper nerve energy and flow of information in order to function properly. If left uncorrected, a spinal malfunction can interrupt this internal communication system causing pain, muscle and organ dysfunction and other imbalances.
The Doctor of Chiropractic, through a proceedure called adjustments, helps to restore misaligned vertebra to a more normal position, removing nerve pressure, thus allowing the brain to properly communicate with the rest of the body and let the body heal itself - safely and naturally. Chiropractic's drugless and preventative approach to good health makes it perfectly appropriate for infants, children, teenagers as well as adults and geriatric population.
Chiropractic Care For All Ages
Q. When should I take my child to a Doctor of Chiropractic?
WHEN you want your child to have all the benefits of a conservative, drugless approach to healthcare. Your child's first visit to our office can be a pleasant experience, one without painful injections and proceedures, but with plenty of nurturing. Your child should be examined during that all important first year of life when spinal trauma can occur during birth as well as from tumbles while learning to sit up or walk. Improper lifting and carrying can also contribute to spinal stress in a child like it can in an adult. A chiropractic examination is so important in the early stages of your child's life.
WHEN you want to give your child a head start in good health. Doctors of Chiropractic believe it is much more important to prevent disease than wait until some illness occurs. Through regular adjustments, counseling on proper diet, exercise and posture, the Doctor of Chiropractic can help you raise a child whose body is structurally and functionally sound. Your child will also learn good health habits at an early age which can be very beneficial to him or her as an adult.
Chiropractic Quick Facts
Chiropractic is the fastest growing and second largest primary health care profession. There are over 60,000 Doctors of Chiropractic (DC's) in active practice in the United States spread from rural areas to inner cities. Chiropractic educational programs are accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education, a federally recognized accrediting body.
Doctors of Chiropractic receive extensive, demanding professional education in order to be primary care providers, on par with the two other primary provider groups, allopathic providers (MD's) and osteopaths (DO's). To receive a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, candidates must complete extensive undergraduate prerequisites and four years of graduate level instruction and an internship at an accredited chiropractic institution. Comprehensive knowledge of all systems of the body and diagnostic procedures enable the DC to thoroughly evaluate a patient, address disorders relating to the spine and determine the need for referral to another health care provider when necessary.
Doctors of Chiropractic are licensed in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and most every country in the world. Chiropractic is recognized by governmental health care programs including Medicare, Medicaid, Federal Employee Health Care Benefits Programs and all state Workers Compensation Programs. Chiropractic students are qualified to receive federal student loan assistance and DC's are authorized to be commissioned as health care officers in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Doctors of Chiropractic provide effective, low cost health care for a wide range of conditions. Studies conducted according to the highest scientific standards published by organizationa not affiliated in any way with chiropractic institutions or associations continue to show the clinical appropriateness and effectiveness of chiropractic care. One study, funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health stated emphatically that: "On the evidence, particularly the most scientifically valid clinical studies, spinal manipulation applied by chiropractors is shown to be more effective than alternative treatments for low back pain... There would be highly significant cost savings if more management of low back pain was transferred from physicians to chiropractors."
Chiropractic is non invasive, therefore, the body's response to chiorpractic care is far more predictable than its reactions to drug treatments or surgical proceedures. Of the more than 1 million adjustments given every day in this country, complications are exceedingly rare. Perhaps the best summary statement on the subject of safety was published in 1979 by the Government of New Zealand which established a special commission to study chiropractic. They found: "The conspicuous lack of evidence that chiropractors cause harm or allow harm to occur through neglect of medical referral can be taken to mean only one thing: that chiropractors have on the whole an impressive safety record."
As a chiropractor who cares about utilizing the most advanced chiropractic techniques, Dr. Barry D.Shapiro has years of training, expertise and experience in helping patients get pain relief for back pain, neck pain, headaches, and other related conditions originating from the spine. Chiropractic care under a trained professional can even be used to prevent injuries and help you achieve total health or wellness.
At Carrollwood Family Medical, we teach our patients how to perform special "blueprint" exercises which can help strengthen and correct the irregularities in their body which may be causing pain. Many of these corrective exercises can actually be performed in the comfort of your own home to help improve the effectiveness of your chiropractic care, rehabliltation, massage and spinal correction plan. In addition to skeletal misalignment, you may be experiencing pain that is caused by muscles and connective tissues which are out of their proper place. Other types of pain such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches are caused by muscles and tissues that are being used improperly, causing injuries over time. In each case, targeted corrective exercises and stretches from our experienced staff will help you feel good while also helping your body achieve balance and health.
First, by targeting the injured, healing area with specific exercises, we help accelerate recovery as well as your return to work and play. Second, by reviewing your current workout routine, we can help you identify exercises that are not beneficial or may lead you to additional or re-occurring injury. Third, we can suggest alternative exercises that enhance performance, increase flexibility and range of motion, and improve stamina.
Many of our patients come to see our clinic to address a specific pain symptom such as back pain, neck pain or headaches. While our chiropractor will address each patient's specific condition with chiropractic care, we often find it helpful to "coach" our patients towards achieving a healthier lifestyle. For example, there may be certain activities that you should avoid or do differently to prevent yourself from unintentionally aggravating your particular health challenges. The goal of including lifestyle advice with a chiropractic care plan is to help each and every patient achieve the fulfilling and happy lifestyle they deserve, one that is full of the activities that are enjoyed most. We recognize that every single one of our patients is a whole person, and we use our expertise to help them reach total health and wellness.
What does nutrition have to do with my health care? The goal of the Carrollwood Family Medical and Rehabilitation Center is to help patients achieve total health and balance with their body, and as part of that goal we provide specific recommendations on nutritional supplements and healthy food choices to patients that are interested.
Nutritional counseling by our experienced health professionals can assist a patient on their return to optimal health. Do you know which supplements and vitamins are good for you? Do you know how these supplements and vitamins interact with one another? Do you know that food combination affects absorbtion of nutrients? Do you buy fresh, frozen or canned?
At Carrollwood Family Medical, we can provide each patient with a structured nutritional program that is based on their individual needs. With either the use of a patient diet survey, testing for food allergies, or a program of nutritional supplements, we will try to get the right approach for you to help meet your nutritional needs.
We provide articles on these and other nutritional topics from time to time. Take advantage of this resource material as it becomes available to you.
Massage is usually defined as "the systematic manual or mechanical manipulations of the soft tissues of the body for the purpose of promoting circulation of the blood and lymph, relaxation of the muscles, myofascia, tendons and ligaments." Massage can be extremely effective and beneficial in treating chronic pain and stress, restoration of metabolic imbalance, blood pressure reduction, and many other medical benefits.
In adults and children, massage has been shown to lower stress and anxiety while imporving sleep and immune function. Massage therapy does more than make you feel good, it can actually help your body achieve balance and health. Massage is being used to boost athletic performance, reduce agitation in Alzheimer's patients and relieve stress at disaster sites.
Now science is confirming what we knew clinically. Studies have shown massage to have positive effects on conditions from colic, hyperactivity, diabetes, and migraines. Massage, it seems, helps asthmatics breath easier, and boosts immune functions in patients. Massage also reduces cramping spasms, improves autistic children's ability to concentrate, lowers anxiety in depressed adolescents and reduces apprehension in burn victims about to undergo debridement (the painful procedure by which contaminated skin is removed).
Massage may increase the lymph flow rate. It enhances immune function and lowers levels of the stress hormones cortisol and norepinephrine. Massage also stimulates the vagus nerve, one of the major nerves that influence various bodily functions. One branch of the vagus nerve travels to the gastrointestinal tract, where it facilitates the release of food absorption hormones like insulin and glucose.
Massage therapy offers a natural treatment approach which actually relieves musculoskeletal pain for many patients. Our office provides specific massage and muscular therapy that is tailored to meet the patient's unique pain condition or injury. Some investigative studies have even indicated that a single session of massage may help boost your immune system!
The number of insurance plans covering massage is increasing but remains small. At Carrollwood Family Medical we are happy to work with your insurance coverage and bill directly for covered services for you. Contact our scheduling staff for an appointment.

Physical therapy is the field of medical care that uses exercise and such physical agents as heat, light, water, and massage to treat certain physical disabilities. Among its objectives are the relief of pain caused by surgery or by medical problems; the improvement of muscle strength, mobility; and the improvement of such basic functions as standing, walking, and grasping in patients who are recovering from debilitating illnesses or accidents or who are physically handicapped.
Heat may be applied to ease stiffening and pain in the joints. Massage is a standard physiotherapeutic technique, both for easing pain and for improving circulation. The most frequent type of treatment, however, is exercise, carefully chosen to increase joint mobility or to improve strength and coordination.
Synergie The Cellulite Solution
What is Synergie?
Over the years, many have claimed "miracle" cures for cellulite, but most yielded disappointing results - until now. Introducing Synergie, a powerful solution for reducing the appearance of cellulite. Synergie, cleared by the FDA for the "temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite," uses revolutionary vacuum massage technology that smooths and tightens the skin while improving circulation. Synergie finally provides the solution millions of women have been seeking.
Does Synergie work?
A 1998 study conducted by two noted plastic surgeons confirmed the efficacy of Synergie with 91% of the women treated reporting a significant reduction in the appearance of cellulite. More importantly, since Synergie was introduced in 1998, thousands of women across the country have experienced similar dramatic results.
"Vacuum massage physically manipulates the collagen fibers and connective tissue and increases metabolism tov the treated area through increased local blood circulation. This results in a smoother skin texture, thus reducing the appearance of cellulite." Dr. James E. Pickens, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Synergie Cellulite Program
Synergie cellulite treatments provide optimal stimulation, stretching, and pressure to subcutaneous tissues offering a type of subdermal tissue massage not possible through traditional massage techniques.
A typical Synergie treatment program consists of a series of twice-weekly sessions, followed by monthly maintenance visits. The number of treatments is customized to meet the individual's goals. Treatments last approximately 30 minutes.
Factors such as proper diet and exercise will obviously have an effect on the overall health of your body as well. While you are taking the time to improve the appearance of your body, why not also incorporate nutrition and exercise for a truly well-rounded healthy lifestyle.
